Admission Policy (Department of Materials Structure Science)

People the Department Nurtures

The main purpose of the Department of Materials Structure Science is to nurture and train people who can play a leading role in experimental and theoretical research in future and contribute to the development of materials structure research using accelerator-generated quantum beams such as synchrotron radiation, neutrons, muons, and positrons. We provide educational and research instruction on materials structure science from a broad perspective, including living organisms, based on the theory of the interaction between the above-mentioned quantum beams and material structures. In addition, we provide instruction and guide research on the principle of quantum beam generation and relevant devices; the principles of diffraction, scattering, and spectroscopy and relevant devices of these quantum beams; and also the principle of quantum beam detection and relevant devices. Thus, we nurture talented people who will be capable of advancing not only materials structure science with the use of quantum beams, but also various related scientific fields in the future.

Students We Seek

Students who apply to the Department of Materials Structure Science are required to have

  1. Adequate fundamental knowledge of materials science, including living organisms, and of English.
  2. Innate qualities necessary to conduct advanced research, such as objectivity, curiosity, and motivation to learn.

Distinctive Features of Education at the Department

The Institute of Materials Structure Science of the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, where the Department of Materials Structure Science is based, is a unique research institute with accelerators that generate four types of quantum beams: synchrotron radiation, neutrons, muons, and positrons. No other institute has all four accelerators, making it a research center paramount in this field, both nationally and internationally. Our department uses this favorable environment to the fullest, promoting education in and being at the forefront of research in materials structure science. The faculty members who conduct leading research in the field are involved in the challenging curriculum and have put in place research themes on materials structure science, including living organisms, in which the student can be involved.
