●課題の概要
近年、共鳴X線散乱(RXS)実験は、任意の元素の狙いの軌道の情報が得られる手法として確立してきた。そこで本研究課題は、PF BL-16Aにおいて立ち上げられてきた軟X線回折装置を高度化するとともに、既存のBL-4C, 3A におけるRXS実験装置を組み合わせることによって、硬X線領域だけなく軟X線領域でのRXS実験を相補的に行い、物性の鍵を握る原子の電子状態や、その変調構造の解明を目指すものである。
強相関電子系では、電子の局在状態と遍歴状態の狭間で、通常の金属では見られない高温超伝導、巨大磁気抵抗効果といった特徴的な物性が頻繁に発現する。例えば、強相関電子系で発見された超伝導体は、スピン・電荷の秩序状態が抑制され消失する量子臨界点近傍に一般に位置していることが知られている。従って、局在性と遍歴性の競合した電子状態の研究が、新奇物性発現メカニズムの解明の上で極めて重要となる。そこで、硬X線、軟X線を組み合わせたRXS実験により、これまで注目して来た局在性の強い電子(遷移金属 3d電子,希土類 4f電子) だけなく、遍歴性の強い電子(酸素2pなど)状態を区別して捉えることを目指す。結果として、局在的電子だけでなく遍歴的電子も含めた新たな秩序状態、つまり"軌道混成秩序状態"を定量的に解明できると考えている。ここでは、結晶構造解析より求まる原子位置と混成との関係にも注目する。さらに外場(磁場、圧力、温度)制御による秩序状態融解過程において、この軌道混成状態をパラメータとして、系の電子自由度(電荷・スピン・軌道)秩序と物性発現機構の関連性を研究することが出来る。このような軌道混成状態をパラメータとした研究は今まで行われておらず、遍歴性と局在性の狭間で出現する新奇な物性発現機構に迫れるものと考えている。
